Review: Bent by the Pandemic, the Graham Company Dances On
The oldest of American dance troupes, the Martha Graham Dance Company weathered the early phases of the pandemic better than most. Its virtual offerings drew treasures from the company’s great archive and experimented with various reframings, effectively making the case for the continued relevance of Graham’s work in these times. On Tuesday, the company returned to the Joyce Theater for a week of in-person live performances, and although the pandemic is not over, the first program felt in many ways like the ones before the world changed: uneven renditions
Dancer reflects on American Ballet Theatre’s return to the stage
NEW YORK — To see a rehearsal for "Giselle" is to get a glimpse into the countless grueling hours a ballet dancer spends preparing for any role. For one dancer, the Mohiniyattam became a step to unlocking a whole new world
One of the best outcomes of a cultural exchange is when the person on the visiting end has their stereotypes shattered. “Before I visited India, I had this image that everyone in India loves dancing,” recalls Hiromi Maruhashi, who moved to the country to study when she was 24. “But, only after I got there did I realize that not everyone likes or learns classical dance. It’s a minority, and I became one of them.” Maruhashi, now 55, is an expert in Mohiniyattam dance, one of the recognized classical
Silky Ballet Solos and Irresistible Tapping Toes Close Fall for Dance
When Fall for Dance checks all the boxes and puts on a satisfying show, you can’t help but feel a sense of euphoria about the art form and its myriad possibilities. But it’s rare. The New York City Center festival, popular for its eclectic programs and inexpensive tickets, can also make you feel a little sick to your stomach — it’s like being at a buffet and making the terrible decision to gorge on sushi, pizza and every last dessert on the menu. On Saturday night, I didn’t
