BRIDGEPORT, Pa. (CBS) — The ongoing cleanup after historic flooding and tornadoes from the remnants of Ida devastated parts of the area. Residents and business owners are throwing out trash and debris vowing to rebuild their lives. As residents continue the process of cleaning up along the Schuylkill River, the trash is continuing to pile up. The Schuylkill River is just across the street and when it flooded Wednesday night, homes and businesses on either side went underwater. The basement and first floor of a dance studio are destroyed and

In 1950, choreographer Katherine Dunham found herself, not for the first time, walking the line between artist and entrepreneur. The debut of her ballet Southland in Santiago, Chile, commissioned by the country’s national symphony, had infuriated U.S. State Department officials. Amid the height of the Cold War, a dance depicting a brutal lynching in the antebellum South was not the kind of image-boosting arts experience that the U.S. was seeking to promote. Dunham had a stark choice: stop performing Southland on her South American tour or risk losing her business. For the

In an industry with strict physique expectations, Colleen Werner is forging an alternate path—an adult dance experience that celebrates body diversity. While studying to become a clinical mental health counselor in Nashville, she’s simultaneously dancing with Black Sheep Ballet, a virtual company that aims to bring ballet to more diverse audiences. Meanwhile on Instagram, she’s amassed more than 65K followers through her body-positive posts, and become an ambassador for Gaynor Minden and Discount Dance Supply. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A Knoxville dancer isn't letting disabilities stop her from doing what she loves. In fact, 18-year-old Becca Jones embraces her differences on the dance floor. Inside Royal Youth Dance Ensemble, Jones may move with her feet, but she dances with her heart. "Dance means freedom," Jones said. "It's a chance to be myself and express my emotions." Not only that, but she's able to share her story. In one of her most recent choreographed dances to "Lost Boy" by Ruth B., she dances with a prop: part

No one but her puppy, Alfie, was with Ayla Ciccone-Burton when she heard the good news from her agent. “I got up at the dog park in front of all these people that I don’t know,” she said. “I’m just running around, full screaming, telling my dog that I’m going to be on Broadway.” “He didn’t care,” she added, and laughed an effervescent laugh. She loves him anyway. Like most performers, Ciccone-Burton won’t be playing a starring role in her show. She’ll be singing and dancing in the ensemble —

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) – Savannah’s first Black nutcracker, Andre McGregor, will soon join the ranks of a world-renowned dance center as he heads off to study in the trainee program at the Joffrey Ballet Academy. “I am so excited that I get to pursue what I’ve been doing for all this time,” said McGregor. “It is amazing that I’ve come to a place where I can pursue this as a professional career, and it’s mind-blowing, honestly.” McGregor graduated from the Savannah Arts Academy in 2020 and took a gap

There’s an old saying that dancers should be seen and not heard. James LaRose, who is slated at age 27 to be the new artistic director for La Mesa-based Kidz Danz Kompany, supports an opposing idea. “We give our children a voice and we listen to what they have to say,” he said after a recent rehearsal for the upcoming production of “Cinderella and Cinderfella.” “We take into consideration their thoughts and feelings and what they are going through.” Read more @ https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/entertainment/story/2021-08-29/dancer-steps-up-with-a-bold-vision-for-his-health-for-his-soul-for-the-kids

Along Main Street, Wiscasset Thursday night, dancers’ feet were leaving the ground and coming back down, and a towering bird was walking around without touching the ground. Dance Maineia from Waldoboro and the stilt walker from Connecticut-based Mortal Beasts and Deities were part of Wiscasset Art Walk. So were a Boothbay man and his guitar, and a Bowdoin College student with a book he wrote. Boothbay’s Rick Turcotte played on his jumbo, handmade Collings guitar he said is like the old Gibsons, and is the best thing he has ever owned. He
